Great article. I love Port Douglas!

As well as the Daintree tours and snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef, the local nightlife in Port Douglas is fantastic and the Sunday markets at Anzac Park are great for picking up handmade souvenirs and crafts.

If you're travelling with kids, make sure you do 'Breakfast with the Birds' at the Wildlife Habitat. A really fun (and delicious!) experience which includes park admission and guided tours for afterwards.

Definitely helps me get in the photo-taking zone as well. I like to find music that I think suits the city (Daft Punk's Random Access Memories definitely suited the rainy, neon-lit nights in Tokyo and Kyoto).
Sometimes a connection forms between a certain place and a particular album, and it's cool experiencing those throwbacks to a trip you took when you listen to the music again.

Hi Jdhdjd,
Quite the name you have there. Thanks for the comment and it’s a shame you wanted to voice this anonymously by not using your name or a real email. All the same, thanks for visiting our page and maybe you can find something else more appealing to you in our other articles.
In reply to <a href="https://travellingsolo.com.au/going-solo/im-33-still-stay-hostels-something-wrong#comment-96">Bas Wallet</a>.

Thanks so much for your comment Bas.

You've hit on something I didn't mention in the article, which is the social element to staying in hostels. I totally agree with you, and apart from price (and sometimes in spite of it) I've stayed at hostels to get my social fix – especially important and sanity-inducing for a solo traveller.

So happy you too are living to your own values and priorities Bas. Happiness is relative, and we're blessed that in comes in many forms in this thing called life.

Thanks for reading and commenting and here's to giving society's values a huge "metal up your ass". Yeah-heh!

Great story Shaun. It’s not up to society to determine social standards (although political parties think differently somehow).

I have the luxury to stay in hotels but I’d rather stay in hostels with private rooms so I don’t have to deal with dorm inconveniences but still benefit from the social value of hostels (although wifi has decreased this a lot the last years).

It’s better to be truly happy than pretending you are behind the facade of a Volkswagen, Apple watch and artificial Christmas tree.

Full disclosure, I drive a Volkswagen, don’t wear an Apple watch (I prefer Fitbit) and use my Christmas break to travel so no fake trees in my house. Shauns stories still make me me feel like an employed slave (but I’m genuinely happy too). :)
