Going solo on a polar cruise

The popularity of Polar cruises is ever increasing due to better accessibility and the prospect of a truly adventurous experience.

Chimu Adventures are chartering a number of exclusive small ship voyages for the 2019 and 2020 season to both Antarctica and the Arctic.

They offer same sex match up cabins so any solo traveller who is happy to share with another passenger of the same gender is not charged a single supplement.

Those who would like their own cabin can opt for this at 1.7 times the advertised price. The beauty of Polar cruising is that the cost of the voyage includes all meals, unlimited tea and coffee and all activities – the only extra expenses are air fare and optional bar drinks/gratuities.

Polar cruises on small ships are a great environment for meeting like-minded travellers, many also travelling solo. Passenger numbers are restricted to under 200 so guests can be as autonomous or as social as they wish. There are communal areas such as lecture theatres, libraries, observation decks, bars/ restaurants (with open seating plans) but also many quiet areas for down time.

The expedition and hospitality crew do a fantastic job of making everybody feel welcome and cared for,  the hospitality staff are known to also learn every guests’ name prior to them arriving.

Days are spent going out on zodiacs in groups to do either a shore landing or cruise so this is another great time to get to know your fellow passengers, as are the additional activities such as kayaking and snowshoeing. Evening entertainment consists of lectures from expedition team members, quizzes, bands and film nights (all completely optional).

One of the best things about Polar cruises is how immersive they are – access to telephone signal and internet is strictly limited and/or expensive so time spent aboard is the perfect excuse to take a break from technology, lose yourself in the experience of being in the world’s most spectacular scenery, allow the professional crew to take care of absolutely everything and make new friends.
