I hate compromising and that’s why I travel solo

Call me selfish, call me whatever you like. But then don’t be jealous when I post epic pics of my time at a surf camp in Morocco.

Because in order to do this I had to travel solo. There wasn’t any other way.

Trying to make everyone happy is basically a futile affair when travelling. This one wants to go here, the other one wants to go there. And then there’s the whole drama of trying to co-ordinate everyone’s annual leave. Ah, these are the headaches you could definitely do without…

But make the decision to travel solo, and you don’t ever have to compromise on what it is you want to do. And why should you anyway:  after all, this is your holiday, your time off, and – unfortunately – you don’t get much of it in the 9 to 5 world.

Travelling solo will also give you that rush of adventure that comes with venturing out into an exotic world on your own.

If you want to finally tick off those experiences and destinations that have been accumulating on your bucket-list for eons, you’re going to need to adopt the attitude of no-compromise. Figure out what it is that you want to do and then just go and do it on your own – to hell if no one else can join you!

Plus, you’re never really on your own when travelling solo anyway, as you’ll meet a ton of cool people along the way. Travelling solo will push you out of your comfort zone and force you make the first move. It will lead you into having some pretty interesting conversations with people that you wouldn’t otherwise talk to – conversations that you’ll remember for life.

Travelling solo will also give you that rush of adventure that comes with venturing out into an exotic world on your own.

Of course, if a mate can come along then great. But if not, no worries. The last thing you want to do is regret not going ice caving in Iceland or spending five days in the Sahara just because “nobody could go with you.”

Because at the end of the day, when you’re grey and old, you’re going to be mighty proud of yourself for taking the plunge and heading off into this beautiful world of ours on your lonesome. Remember: you always come first, so don’t forget it!

Non-compromiser for life!

If I was friends with a magician, I’d message them on FB and ask them out for a beer. Then once at the bar, I’d plead like crazy for them to turn me into a bird so I could spread my wings and fly all over the world – for free! In the meantime, I guess I’ll just have to settle for being a travel writer with an incurable case of wanderlust and a remarkable ability to get lost. @shaunbusuttil #theshaunbusuttil
